Studio Physique Trainer Angela credits speedy recovery from abdominal surgery to core strength thanks to Lagree Fitness!
We always hear from coaches, trainers, and doctors how core strength is important to your overall health. Well, I’m here to tell you that everything they say is true.
I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease as a teenager. A year later at 15, I was recovering in a hospital bed with a 10 inch incision in my stomach from an abdominal surgery that would not be my last. Crohn’s disease is a bowel disease that causes inflammation often treated by steroids and other medications. In many cases, surgery is required to remove the diseased portion of the bowel. And because the surgeon often needs to be able to inspect the bowel with his own eyes, cutting through the abdominal muscle wall is usually required. Robots haven’t perfected it yet.
Last August, I underwent my fourth surgery to remove the portion of my bowel that was not responding to medication. I knew the drill. I wasn’t 15, or 21, or 33 anymore so I was realistic that the recovery would be tougher. Abdominal surgery is no picnic. In the days and weeks afterward, every deep breath hurts, every cough and every sneeze is brutal. Motions as simple as standing up and bending over take weeks of therapy and straining through the pain. Add your aging body into the mix and I was dreading it.
But this time, things were different.
I’d been working on my overall health and fitness for several years, but it wasn’t until I joined Studio Physique that I discovered how much of a difference Lagree Fitness could make for me. And it was never more obvious than my second day of post-op. I was able to get up out of the bed on my own and walk the halls and use the restroom. In the weeks following my surgery, I was stronger, more active and recovered more quickly than any of the previous surgeries.
While I am gracious for the great medical care I was given, I attribute much of my speedy recovery to my own core strength and newfound flexibility that I attained through Lagree Fitness. At the end of my fourth week post op, I returned to Studio Physique as a trainer and two weeks later I was back on the machine.
